U.S. Market Futures Pointing Lower after New Highs

U.S. stock futures are pointing lower in pre-market trading for Friday, July 15. The Dow Futures are at 18420.0 for a loss of -7.00 points. The S&P 500 Futures are at 2155.25 for a loss of -2.00 points. The Nasdaq Futures are lower at 4588.25 for a loss of -1.75 points. The Russell Futures are showing a loss of -0.90 points at 1198.7.

In overnight trading in the Eastern Hemisphere stocks were mixed. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was higher at 16497.85 for a gain of 111.96 points or 0.68 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was higher at 21659.25 for a gain of 98.19 points or 0.46 percent. China’s Shanghai Composite was higher at 3054.30 for a gain of 0.28 points or 0.01 percent. India’s S&P BSE Sensex was lower at 27836.50 for a loss of -105.61 points or -0.38 percent.

In Europe, stocks were mostly lower. The FTSE 100 was lower at 6625.51 for a loss of -28.96 points or -0.44 percent. Germany’s DAX was lower at 9988.80 for a loss of -79.50 points or -0.79 percent. France’s CAC 40 was lower at 4343.44 for a loss of -42.08 points or -0.96 percent. The Stoxx Europe 600 was lower at 336.27 for a loss of -2.23 points or -0.66 percent.

Friday’s Factors and Events

U.S. stocks seem to be retreating after new highs for the week and a terrorist attack in France that has slightly spooked traders.

Leading economic reports on the calendar for Friday include Retail Sales, the Consumer Price Index, the Empire State Manufacturing Survey, Industrial Production, Business Inventories, Consumer Sentiment and the Baker-Hughes Rig Count.

Stocks actively trading in the pre-market on Friday include Frontier Communications, Yum! Brands Inc., Microsoft, Celgene, Netflix Inc. and Newmont Mining.

Earnings reports on the calendar for Friday include Atlas Copco AB ADR, Citigroup Inc., FBR & Co. , First Horizon National Corporation, Infosys Limited, Inc., Orkla ASA ADR, PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., Singapore Press Holdings Ltd., Shaw Communications Inc., Svenska Handelsbanken AB PUBL, U.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo & Co.

Thursday’s Activity

On Thursday the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 reached new highs. For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 18506.41 for a gain of 134.29 points or 0.73 percent. The S&P 500 closed at 2163.75 for a gain of 11.32 points or 0.53 percent. The Nasdaq Composite closed higher at 5034.06 for a gain of 28.33 points or 0.57 percent.

Other notable index closes in the U.S. included the small-cap Russell 2000, higher at 1202.17 for a gain of 1.01 points or 0.08 percent; the S&P 600 closing at 739.46 for a gain of 0.18 points or 0.02 percent; the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index which closed at 1544.06 for a gain of 3.37 points or 0.22 percent; the S&P 100 closing at 956.63 for a gain of 5.61 points or 0.59 percent; the Russell 3000 Index closing at 1276.03 for a gain of 5.88 points or 0.46 percent; the Russell 1000 Index closing at 1197.51 for a gain of 5.88 points or 0.49 percent; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closing at 623.86 for a gain of 0.29 points or 0.05 percent.
