New concerns regarding supply constraints through the Strait of Hormuz have intensified following the latest exchange of strikes between the U.S. and Iran in the region, resulting in an increase in oil prices. The U.S. stock markets are set to close for a holiday; however, traders are anticipating the release of crucial inflation data later this week, which may influence the Federal Reserve’s approach to adjusting interest rates. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang asserts that the era of artificial general intelligence has “arrived,” emphasising the significance of OpenAI’s latest Astra model.

Brent crude prices experienced an uptick on Monday, as investors monitored the ongoing military standoff in the Middle East. By 03:02, Brent futures had risen by 1.1% to $97.31 a barrel. Last week, the contract experienced a surge of nearly 10%, indicative of renewed concerns regarding an extended blockade of commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route situated off the southern coast of Iran. Iranian authorities have indicated intentions to announce a restricted zone near the strait “in the coming days.” The declaration follows the action taken by U.S. forces, which struck and disabled three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend. Washington characterised this move as retaliation for a ballistic missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that targeted two U.S. Navy warships in the region. Shipping through the strait has declined to its lowest level since May, as indicated by shipping data referenced in media reports. On Saturday, only two vessels navigated the waterway, while Sunday saw an increase with six vessels transiting. The 10-day moving average has decreased to 10.

Energy supply shortages resulting from the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global markets, with traders concerned about the potential for an oil price shock to drive inflation higher and interest rates to increase. The conflict itself, now six months old, has entered a tense stalemate. The U.S. seems to be either “incapable” or “unwilling” to bring the conflict to a close, while Tehran is “digging its heels,” according to analysts. However, they flagged that Washington appears to be “winning the war of Hormuz.” According to source, an American naval blockade of Iranian ports, along with tougher sanctions, is curbing Tehran’s oil exports and access to foreign currency. The Iranian economy is exhibiting indications of pressure due to these measures, as reported, referencing Iranian insiders and regional sources. Whether that compels Iranian leadership to return to the negotiating table is yet to be determined. As the analysts articulate, the U.S. pressure may ultimately result in a “Pyrrhic victory as Tehran’s economic desperation prompts it to escalate the conflict even further.

In a notable development, two envoys representing U.S. President Donald Trump embarked on their inaugural visit to Kyiv on Sunday, with the objective of rekindling negotiations aimed at addressing the enduring geopolitical conflict: the war between Ukraine and Russia. Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Trump, along with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, travelled to Moscow over the weekend. During their visit, they engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding concrete strategies to resolve the ongoing conflict, as reported by a White House official. Further information regarding those plans will be disclosed in “the coming weeks,” the official informed. Both Ukraine and Russia, engaged in a protracted conflict that has further disrupted global energy flows, refrained from recent bombing campaigns while diplomats visited each nation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that artificial general intelligence has “arrived,” highlighting OpenAI’s latest model GPT-6 Astra as a significant milestone in the swift evolution of AI systems. In a recent post on X, Huang extended his congratulations to OpenAI for the launch of Astra. OpenAI has characterised the model as its most advanced and aligned system, demonstrating superior performance in areas such as computer usage, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific research, and professional tasks. Huang stated that Astra was trained utilising over 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems, highlighting the extensive computational resources necessary for the advancement of cutting-edge AI models. “From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years,” Huang noted, adding that another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs were coming online.

At least five individuals have been reported deceased and five others sustained injuries following an incident involving an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane, operated by 21 Air, which overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The aircraft struck multiple vehicles and subsequently ignited in flames. At approximately 2 p.m. local time, Prime Air Flight 7598 overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway and came to rest at the northwest end of the airport, according to a statement from a spokesperson. The cause of the runway overrun remains unclear at this time, with the FAA investigation anticipated to elucidate the factors that contributed to the incident. The crash occurs more than seven years subsequent to an Amazon-branded Boeing 767, operated by Atlas Air, crashing near Houston while en route from Miami, resulting in the fatalities of all three individuals on board. That February 2019 incident pertained to a distinct aircraft and operator.
